PHOENIX AZ – Moorea Pool Care has received several calls from clients worrying about their pool overflowing and flooding their backyard. In most cases, people do not need to worry. If your backyard was properly graded for rain, it should be able to handle an overflowing pool.

The concern is that water will begin pouring out of the pool but in reality the only amount that will overflow is the exactly amount of rain we get.

If your pool does overflow, there are two ways to handle the situation. If you are not concerned about drainage issues around your home you can let the water evaporate.

If you are concerned that the water is coming too close to your home and you want to redirect the drainage you can siphon off some of the water. For pools with sand filters or diatomaceous earth filters this can be done through backwashing your pool away from your home.

Most pools with cartridge filters have a hose bib installed in the pool plumbing where a garden hose can be connected and the pump run to siphon water off. A quick reminder to clients with salt pools, partial draining may require additional salt be added.

If you have concerns about a flooded pool or need assistance during these storms we’re experiencing in Phoenix, contact Moorea Pool Care

Freezing Temperatures in Phoenix Can Damage Your Pool!

BY MOOREA POOL CARE

JANUARY 2, 2016 (PHOENIX, AZ) Luckily in Phoenix we don’t have to deal with ice and snow like other parts of the country. However, the temperatures in the Arizona desserts can get below freezing during the winter months. When temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit and below your pool equipment is at risk for catastrophic damage. When water freezes and forms ice, the ice can expand and crack or damage pipes and pool equipment. The damage cause can be very costly.

How to Prevent Damage to Your Pool

The good news is you can avoid having freezing temperatures damage your pool by following some simple rules during the cold months in Phoenix. The first thing to do is check the weather reports often and be aware ahead of time when freezing temperatures may be forecast. Make a habit of going online to get a 7-day forecast at the beginning of each week during winter.

Follow These Steps When It’s 32 Degrees or Less Outside

  • When outside air temperatures in Phoenix reach 32 degree or lower, make sure that you continuously run your filtration and auxiliary pumps. It’s not necessary to run the pool cleaner pump. The best thing to do is if you have a pool timer, set it from 9 pm. to 7 am. As long as the water is circulating it won’t freeze.
  • If you see any ice forming in the pool or spa, break the ice up. Be sure to check your skimmer and skimmer door too, as this is a common place for ice to form.
  • Make sure that the water level in the pool does not go below the middle of the tile line. If water levels get too low air can be drawn into the skimmer and cause the pool equipment to freeze.
  • Avoid backwashing your pool during cold weather.
  • Avoid using a heater during very cold weather unless it has been constantly running.
  • It’s a good idea to point your spa and pool jets toward the surface to help prevent ice from forming.

By following these tips you’ll avoid freezing temperatures from damaging your pool, and you should have a worry-free winter. If you suspect that you have damage already from freezing temperatures, contact Moorea Pool Care to have a trained service technician inspect your pool.

The Pros and Cons of Using Automatic Pool Cleaners

By Moorea Pool Care

December 7, 2015 (Phoenix, AZ) In Phoenix, AZ pools can get dirty and need cleaning often. Pool cleaning services are a great way to keep your pool clean, but what do you do to keep your pool clean between pool cleaning service visits? Automatic pool cleaners or pool vacuums may be the answer.

Advantages of Pool Cleaners

Pool cleaners have many advantages when cleaning your pool is difficult for you or you just don’t have the time. Pool cleaners can be set-up on an automatic pool-timer, so that you can be cleaning your pool even when you’re not home. This allows the pool owner to control the time of day and the duration of time the pool cleaner is on. The pool owner can set the pool cleaner to only run during low-peak power times and can save money on electricity.

Pool cleaners can keep the pool clean until your pool service arrives to thoroughly clean your pool, add chemicals, and skim the debris from the surface of the pool.

Disadvantages of Pool Cleaners

Pool cleaners are good, but can’t really take the place of a professional pool cleaning service. This is because pool cleaners are limited in how efficiently they can really clean the pool. They can only pick up debris and dirt from the bottom of the pool and often don’t reach every part of a pool, like corners, steps, and walls. Pool cleaners can’t clean the water’s surface, nor can they cleanup and get rid of stubborn pool algae. Pool cleaners can be costly to purchase and maintain.

The Types of Pool Cleaners Available

  • Suction-side – This type of pool cleaner work off the dedicated suction line of your swimming pool. They generally cost less and your pool pump needs to be on to operate them.
  • Pressure-side – This type of pool cleaner works off of the swimming pools pressure-side line and collects debris into a mesh bag on the pool cleaner instead the collected debris going into your pool’s filter like the suction-side type does. This type may need an additional boost-pump to operate and may cost less than a suction-side pool cleaner.
  • Robotic – This type of pool cleaner doesn’t require suction from your swimming pool to run. You simply put the robotic pool cleaner in the pool and it collects debris in an on-board container. You’ll need to physically empty this cleaner when it’s full and these can rather costly.

Automatic pool cleaners can be a great addition to your pool for in-between pool cleaning service calls. They will pick up small debris and dirt and can save you time. They are not recommended to replace using a high quality pool cleaning service. Moorea Pool Care does much more than just vacuum a pool like a pool cleaner does. Their professional service technicians clean your pool, sweep the walls and steps, check and replace your chemicals, and inspect your pool equipment. They also provide required pool maintenance like acid washes and filter cleanings. Contact Moorea Pool Care today for all of your pool cleaning and maintenance needs

Why You Should Acid Wash Your Swimming Pool

By Moorea Pool Care

Your swimming pool can give you years of enjoyment, but what happens when your pool starts to get stained? Many pool owners are unfamiliar with why they may need to acid wash their pools.

They may be unaware of the benefits of an acid wash or have just never considered this type of pool cleaning service before. An acid wash can breathe new life into your pool’s surface.

Why Acid Wash?

You see, over time pools can accumulate ugly stains from algae and hard water deposits, leaving them unsightly and hard to get clean using traditional pool cleaning methods. You may have tried scrubbing and scrubbing and not make a dent in them or only to see the stains reappear later.

Your pool’s surface is porous and if algae is left to grow on the surface too long it will penetrate into the porous surface and will not be able to be easily scrubbed away. This is why its not a good idea to ignore this situation and hope that it goes away on its own. Doing so can cause serious damage to your pool’s surface.

In Arizona the water is very hard and contains a great deal of calcium. This causes problems for appliances and pools because hard water deposits build up quickly on the surfaces.

You may notice the tile in your pool has white calcium deposits on it or appears not to be shiny and new looking any longer or if you have a pebble-tec swimming pool, your surface may look dull. This is due to the hard water deposits. In a plaster pool you can accumulate stains from magnesium and copper in the pool water. These mineral deposits can turn a plaster pool surface a bluish color. Algae can cause black or green stains that won’t go away. If not treated the algae can spread over the entire pool surface, making it impossible to clean by traditional pool cleaning methods. This is when you’ll need to call a pool service professional to acid wash your pool.

What is Acid Washing?

Acid washing a pool is not something that you want to try do on your own. This is definitely not a weekend DIY project, because the chemicals used to acid-wash a pool are highly caustic and could cause serious injury to the unskilled person, not to mention damage to the pool.

The acid wash cleaning removes a thin layer of the pools surface. It removes stubborn stains and calcium deposits. Your pool service professional will drain your pool and apply muriatic acid to the pool’s surface. The muriatic acid will eat away the stubborn stains and deposits.

An acid wash can make your pool look like new again and get rid of those serious stains. It can extend the life of your pool’s surface. In Arizona it’s best to have an acid wash done during the cooler months, since your pool will need to be drained. This way your swimming pool will be nice and swim ready come summertime. You’ll want to consult your pool service company as to how often you should acid wash your pool.
