PHOENIX AZ – Moorea Pool Care has received several calls from clients worrying about their pool overflowing and flooding their backyard. In most cases, people do not need to worry. If your backyard was properly graded for rain, it should be able to handle an overflowing pool.

The concern is that water will begin pouring out of the pool but in reality the only amount that will overflow is the exactly amount of rain we get.

If your pool does overflow, there are two ways to handle the situation. If you are not concerned about drainage issues around your home you can let the water evaporate.

If you are concerned that the water is coming too close to your home and you want to redirect the drainage you can siphon off some of the water. For pools with sand filters or diatomaceous earth filters this can be done through backwashing your pool away from your home.

Most pools with cartridge filters have a hose bib installed in the pool plumbing where a garden hose can be connected and the pump run to siphon water off. A quick reminder to clients with salt pools, partial draining may require additional salt be added.

If you have concerns about a flooded pool or need assistance during these storms we’re experiencing in Phoenix, contact Moorea Pool Care

Freezing Temperatures in Phoenix Can Damage Your Pool!

JANUARY 2, 2016 (PHOENIX, AZ) Luckily in Phoenix we don’t have to deal with ice and snow like other parts of the country. However, the temperatures in the Arizona desserts can get below freezing during the winter months. When temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit and below your pool equipment is at risk for catastrophic damage. When water freezes and forms ice, the ice can expand and crack or damage pipes and pool equipment. The damage cause can be very costly.

How to Prevent Damage to Your Pool

The good news is you can avoid having freezing temperatures damage your pool by following some simple rules during the cold months in Phoenix. The first thing to do is check the weather reports often and be aware ahead of time when freezing temperatures may be forecast. Make a habit of going online to get a 7-day forecast at the beginning of each week during winter.

Follow These Steps When It’s 32 Degrees or Less Outside

  • When outside air temperatures in Phoenix reach 32 degree or lower, make sure that you continuously run your filtration and auxiliary pumps. It’s not necessary to run the pool cleaner pump. The best thing to do is if you have a pool timer, set it from 9 pm. to 7 am. As long as the water is circulating it won’t freeze.
  • If you see any ice forming in the pool or spa, break the ice up. Be sure to check your skimmer and skimmer door too, as this is a common place for ice to form.
  • Make sure that the water level in the pool does not go below the middle of the tile line. If water levels get too low air can be drawn into the skimmer and cause the pool equipment to freeze.
  • Avoid backwashing your pool during cold weather.
  • Avoid using a heater during very cold weather unless it has been constantly running.
  • It’s a good idea to point your spa and pool jets toward the surface to help prevent ice from forming.

By following these tips you’ll avoid freezing temperatures from damaging your pool, and you should have a worry-free winter. If you suspect that you have damage already from freezing temperatures, contact Moorea Pool Care to have a trained service technician inspect your pool.
